Author Reading Preview: Maria Kuznetsova, Author of Oksana, Behave!

The first thing you’ll notice about the cover of Oksana, Behave? Definitely the middle finger being given. That was my first hint that this book might not be your average coming-of-age story.

As the book begins, we meet Oksana, a girl who lives with her parents and grandmother, who have immigrated to the US from Russia. Her parents work many jobs to support the family, and Oksana shares a room with her grandmother in their small apartment in Florida. Her childhood perspective is priceless and utterly delightful. No matter how hard she tries to behave, something usually ends up going wrong. As the book progressed, I found myself rooting for Oksana to behave and to misbehave in equal measure.

Oksana’s story is hilarious, heartwarming, and riveting. She grows up, goes to college, falls in love, searches for a place to call home, tries to figure out what she wants from life, and learns from her family through it all.

Oksana, Behave! might be for you if you enjoy:

  • Coming-of-age stories

  • Humor

  • Immigrant stories

  • Flawed/imperfect protagonists
